I grew up in arcades, surrounded by video games and pinball machines from an early age. About 20 years ago, I started adding emulated games to my PC and hosting gaming parties in my garage. Then 10 years ago started bringing my arcade to festivals, and expanded my gaming collection onto a much smaller Raspberry Pi. Countless hours of work and plenty of valuable feedback later, my game library and frontend menus are fully optimized for an easy and nostalgic user experience.
In 2024, I discovered the open-source virtual pinball community. For months, I studied the many ways other builders had assembled their full-sized cabinets, usually packed with a sea of integrated electronics and gadgets. Even more complex is the intricate dance of many software packages to bring it all together and create such a realistic pinball feel.
Standing on the shoulders of giants and working from first principles, I set out to design and build the most minimalistic yet full-featured version of a wide-body virtual pinball cabinet possible. Three iterations later, "Pinny" provides a remarkably immersive pinball experience with 4K resolution and haptic feedback, yet is small and light enough to be easily portable, energy efficient so stays cool, simplified so relatively affordable, and reproducible so other pinball enthusiasts can benefit from my efforts and skill set.
